What's this all about?
Students research and prepare arguments for a public debate held in their school. (Don't worry, the toolkit provides tips and suggestions on how to organize and publicize this event.) All students who attend the debate will vote on a special form for the side they felt was most compelling. Votes will be tallied from participating schools with the national and international results appearing on the TPS site.
What do we debate?
The next Global Debate is March 2008: "Resolved: Water should be considered national property."
All debates should happen at your school between March 1-24, 2008. (Note: extended dates for March Global Debates!)
Who can Participate?
Any U.S. or international high school (grades 9-12) can participate in the Global Debate. Please register your school online. If you have any questions about eligiblity, contact us at info@thepeoplespeak.org.
Did you say something about a toolkit?
yes, we have a toolkit with everything you will need to know to hold your Global Debate successfully. Click here to download the toolkit.
Where do I begin?
First, register your school online. Then, check out the Resource Center to help you start your research and learn more about the debate topic.
But wait, there's more!
Participating schools can compete to send their four-student TPS debate team (plus two educators) to the United Nations Foundation Youth Leadership Summit. Held in New York in July 2008, this 3-day event will feature amazing opportunities for your students to meet UN officials, learn more about the work of the UN, meet experts in the areas related to the debate topics, and participate in special activities including a UN tour. Educators will receive a professional development training. Ten U.S. teams and 6 international teams will win!
